About the Transparency Unit

Welcome to the new Al Jazeera Transparency Unit Dropbox!

Our new dropbox is a simple yet extremely secure way, using both PGP encryption and the TOR network, to submit content anonymously to the Al Jazeera Transparency Unit. The dropbox client below will automatically encrypt your message and connect to TOR – you don’t have to take any further steps. Just load it, select your files & upload. It’s that simple.

APPLET

Java 1.7 or higher plugin required.

Instructions:

  1. Load the applet and wait until the status bar says “Successfully Connected to TOR Network” – this is crucial to ensuring that you’re anonymous!
  2. Once the applet has connected to TOR, click BROWSE & select the files to upload.
  3. Click UPLOAD once – and wait.
  4. You will receive a message once your files are uploaded.

TIP: If the client above is not working, or you are having trouble connecting to TOR, please refresh the page. The TOR network, while being excellent at providing anonymity, also can take several minutes to connect, so you may have to refresh a few times before it connects. Please be patient.

However, if you do not require the anonymous protection of TOR, please click here for the PGP-only version.

NOTE: While PGP will encrypt the actual files ensuring that no one but us will be able to view the content, the PGP-only dropbox will not have the anonymous protection through TOR that the above standard dropbox can provide. Authorities may be able to trace your internet activities without TOR.

Material we support

We accept all kinds of files - including documents, photos, videos, and audio recordings - with political, economic or ethical significance, in accordance with the Transparency Unit's mission statement. We do not accept rumor, opinion, other kinds of first hand accounts or material that is publicly available elsewhere. This is because our journalists write news stories based on the material, and then provide a link to the supporting documentation to prove our stories are true. It’s not news if it has been publicly available elsewhere first, and we are a news organisation. However, from time to time, the editors may re-publish material that has been made public previously elsewhere if the information is in the public interest but did not have proper news analysis when first released.

Other ways to contact us & submit files

If you have any questions, please contact us at transparency@aljazeera.net.

With any email communication, we highly recommend you encrypt both emails and submitted files using PGP encryption software with our Public Key (Key ID 0x41CE6275). This will guarantee Al Jazeera Transparency Unit will be the only party allowed to view the submitted files and email.

We also recommend that you use the Tor network to add an extra layer of security. Tor is "anonymizing" software: It makes it more difficult to trace your internet activities. (Note that the previous link might be blocked in some countries, so you may have to search for a mirror site that's accessible from your location.)

We recognize that - despite the best technology - our readers and viewers are taking a risk by submitting materials, particularly those living in countries where such disclosures are not protected by law. Our journalists will ensure that the identities of our sources are protected, and that submissions are scrubbed of sensitive information - like the "metadata" that contains authoring information - before those submissions are released to the public.
